NerdWallet Summary

NerdWallet’s partner lenders offer personal loans ranging from $2,000 to $50,000 with rates starting from 5.40% APR.

NerdWallet NerdWallet Visit Nerdwallet

Suitable For?

NerdWallet is a great option for individuals who are just starting to research personal loans. The platform displays loan terms, interest rates, and loan amounts for dozens of lenders. You can also filter lenders based on your credit score or the amount you want to borrow to get a clearer view of your potential options.

NerdWallet mainly works with online-only lenders, so borrowers who prefer an online loan process will benefit most from this platform. You can use NerdWallet’s pre-qualification tool to get personalized offers, but you’ll still need to apply for a loan through the lender’s website.

NerdWallet is also a good resource for anyone who is new to personal finance or wants to learn more about personal loans. The website has tons of educational guides that explain how personal loans work and how they can be used. NerdWallet also offers guides to alternative loan options such as small business loans, student loans, and home equity loans.

Loan Features

NerdWallet is not a direct lender, but rather a marketplace where you can compare personal loans from multiple providers. NerdWallet displays loans from 15 lenders including Upstart, Lightstream, SoFi, Upgrade, and more. You can use personal loans from these companies for everything from refinancing credit card debt to home improvement to paying for emergency expenses.

  • Loan amounts from $2,000 to $50,000
  • Repayment terms from 1 to 7 years
  • Interest rates start at 5.40% APR
  • Loan options for applicants with bad credit
  • Pre-qualify for offers online

Application Process

NerdWallet does not enable you to apply for loans directly through the site. You must visit the lender’s site and go through their application process. However, NerdWallet does have a pre-qualification tool where you can view personalized offers.

The pre-qualification tool requires you to enter information about the amount you want to borrow and what it will be used for. You also need to enter your name, address, phone number, email, and Social Security number. NerdWallet will run a soft credit check, which doesn’t impact your credit score.

NerdWallet will display several offers for which you are pre-qualified. If you see an offer you like, you can apply for it through the lender’s website. NerdWallet will pre-populate your application with information you have already entered to speed up the process.

Notably, you can get a sense of personal loan options available from NerdWallet’s partners without going through the pre-qualification process. NerdWallet offers a comparison table that you can filter based on the amount you want to borrow, your preferred repayment term, your credit score, and your state. The table displays each lender’s range for loan amounts, repayment terms, and interest rates.

Requirements

NerdWallet’s lenders work with a wide variety of borrowers. You can filter the comparison table based on your state of residence and your credit score. NerdWallet has loan partners in all 50 states and partners who offer personal loans to individuals with bad credit. If you’re not sure whether you’ll qualify, you can use NerdWallet’s pre-qualification tool to check offers.

Loan Terms

NerdWallet’s partner lenders offer loans ranging in size from $2,000 to $50,000. Interest rates start as low as 5.40% for borrowers with excellent credit. You can view interest rate ranges for each lender in NerdWallet’s comparison table and check your personalized rates using the platform’s pre-qualification tool.

Repayment Terms

The lenders that NerdWallet works with offer loan repayment terms from 1-7 years. You can view the repayment term range for each lender in the main comparison table and even sort the results by term length.

Privacy & Security

NerdWallet uses SSL encryption to protect the information you submit through the pre-qualification tool. You do not have to sign up for a NerdWallet account, although you have the option to create a password-protected account. There is no personal information required to view the comparison table.

Help & Support

NerdWallet offers a contact form for users to get in touch. There is no phone number or email address to contact.

Not A Good Idea
Shady as can be. Went to nerd wallet late one night to find a more competitive auto rate. Put in my information and started getting contacted by the shadiest of companies. That's not the bad part. By the next morning, had almost a dozen new hard credit checks. My credit score dropped by almost 80 points. Literally, overnight. Checked my credit again,7 months later, and it's back up, but it still shows that there's 13 credit checks in my recent history. When you get multiple auto or home loans within a 14-day period, it's supposed to correct itself and count as a single credit check. I don't know what nerd wallet did. But, it definitely didn't go that way. When putting in my info, thought that they'd run a credit check themselves, then offer that guarantee to their partners, so that you'd only have a single credit check on your history. Not the case at all. They literally just take all of your info and forward it to any rando company to run additional credit checks over and over. With your info all over like that, you have to worry about more potential for security breaches. Super unprofessional. Not saying you shouldn't use Nerd Wallet to read up or research things. But, go to a more credible website to do business. Best of luck!

Dangerous Website for Giving Personal Data
Beware - The minute you fall for their process of researching loans for small business, your phone begins exploding with calls and text messages, automated ones, from sketchy "funders" and loan businesses. This website is dangerous and should be avoided at all costs.

Misleading
Was checking my credit score. And to improve my score Nerd Wallet said opening a new credit card would help. So scanned through all the credit cards they had listed and found one that indicated I had excellent approval odds. So I filled out the application. And it was not approved! So a hard hit on my credit score. Thanks but No thanks Nerd Wallet for your advice, closing my account.

The whole truth
A great deal of useful information but where the tire meets the road for we who are of fair or poor credit their lenders, based on an opinion of fact and experiences, are NOT who they are alleged to be. Frankly, they're a facade. After the alleged they found a lender alert comes the UNFORTUNATELY. You know- just like your preapproved for-nothing- Don't expect anything because they use corrupt data as input to consider you and provide no method to refute that wrong information. Opinion - a sham! Sorry, truth hurts and their lenders know it! NOT THEIR FAULT just do not care. Opinion- as expressed- by experience - the system designed that way! Since asked to expand UNDERSTAND Credit reporting is in my opinion and via years of trying to resolve incorrect reporting a sham. That stated these reports form the basis for approval or denial by a lender. No argument in that however, you advertise your lenders might help people with fair or poor credit. In every case misinformation. Yes, you may provide a USURIOUS LENDER, who merely buries people further down the financial nightmare of seeking true help. Suggestion- Consider the TRACK RECORD OF INDIVIDUAL PAYMENT history and not the inept, inaccurate, credit reports that never favor people because the system does not do anything to resolve that corrupt data or at least allow people to TRULY qualify the errors! NO, not the hand picked responses of the credit bureaus! Then at least your lenders will be giving people a fair shake. Look, one cannot blame them but it used to be called assigned risk of doing business- no more! eliminated! Why is that? In my opinion A FAIR SHAKE will never happen I believe all know WHY- IT is - $$$$$. RESPECTFULLY.

NerdWallet Spam Mail
I was receiving non-stop NerdWallet emails and I never subscribed or visited the website. I u subscribed more than 10 times and the emails continued. I contacted them and asked them to stop the spam mail because it's I don't want it, I never asked for it, it's harassment and illegal. They continue to send their emails. With no other recourse I threatened them with legal action, the email stopped but afterwards my inbox has been flooded with other spam mail daily. So the result of me asking them to stop sending me emails because I never subscribed to them was them getting angry and filling my inbox with spam mail. NerdWallet needs to be investigated and find or shut down. You guys should be ashamed of yourselves.

This company is a complete Scam
This company is a complete Scam. I followed Nerd Wallets suggestion and applied for a debt consolitation loan based on my credit score of 723. Their website stated that it would not impact my credit score. I filled out all the information and submitted it and immediately I started getting alerts on my phone about a new hard credit pull from a bank called Truist. I am starting to think that all of these credit companies such as Nerd Wallet, Credit Karma, and Credit Sesame are complete scams and wish I would have never followed their recomendation. My credit score just dropped 14 points because of this. Of course they have no customer service to speak of so ill just leave a bad review and move on.

Nerdwallet advertised that
Nerdwallet advertised that, if I entered my information, they would get car insurance quotes for me. I provided my information. I even signed up. Then they kept diverting me to the same sign up screen multiple times, at least 3 times, with NO results. Trouble-shooting did not help. No way to contact them. VERY Disappointed! Would NOT recommend. Now worried about them selling my info.

Bait and Switch mortgage advertising
NerdWallet engages in Bait and Switch mortgage advertising. Even the lender was surprised. In the morning, I screenshotted a NerdWallet advertisement for a 5.5% rate with $1176 fees for a 15 year mortgage and various other parameters. I even downgraded my credit rating by 100 to be conservative. I then spent an hour filling out an online application for the lender they'd quoted, only to find out the best they could do was 6.25% (and a higher total fee) for the exact same parameters as before. I went back and rechecked the NerdWallet website, and they were still advertising the same 5.5% rate for that lender. I took my screenshot, with parameter selections showing, and sent it to the lender. The lender said he'd send it to his technical team, but he didn't know why the quote was so different.

They do their own reviews, Garbage!
They do their own reviews. Not even real reviews, their team does it based on payouts. Have you seen a bank or other financial institution on here that you know for a fact couldn't be 5 stars, but they still are? I see companies with complaints everywhere else, but you come to Nerd Wallet and they are 5 stars. Something has to be done about buying reviews or in this case whole review sites. It is shady and the US Government needs to step in sadly. I can't believe I am saying that, but there are more pay companies that guarantee you high rankings, than legit review companies with honest customer reviews.

Just opened a profile on Nerd Wallet
Just opened a profile on Nerd Wallet. After completing my profile and providing monthly bill info and pulling my credit report all which took some time I moved on to linking my bank account. After picking my bank from a drop down list I was asked to provide user/password info to link the account and needed to provide a code from my bank which I never received. When I went back to the NW app to request another code I was unable to access the app. All I got was a green NW logo. I immediately unistalled the app. I then reinstalled the app but was only able to login with my user/password not the easy access fingerprint I was using. None of the previous info I had spent time inputting existed. All very suspicious. I called my bank to freeze my account for the time being until/if I hear from Nerd Wallet about my concerns. Nerd Wallet advertises everywhere so I'm sure phishing is prevalent. May have been a glitch but the experience gave me a really bad feeling.

DONT BELIEVE NERDWALLET REVIEWS OR TRUST OPEN SKY CREDIT CARD
NerdWallet recommended The Open Sky credit card to help repair my credit. It required us to put up a 500.00 deposit as security. After submitting our deposit We waited patiently for 3 weeks with no correspondence from Open Sky. The phone number given for Open Sky was completely automated, so useless in other words. I had to contact Credit One Bank, the parent company as was directed to call 1- 800 859-6412 and stay silent thru all the prompts. When we finally spoke to someone they said they were having trouble getting cards printed and that they have no idea when they would be able to send a card. We asked for our deposit back as they were not fulfilling any service just holding a deposit with no date to fulfill obligations in sight. They said if we do we will be charged the annual fee regardless and if will take UP TO 8 WEEKS ( 4 weeks average) TO RECIEVE IT BACK. THEY TOOK IT FROM OUR ACCOUNT IMMEDIATELY UPON SIGNING UP. BOTH OPEN SKY AND CREDIT ONE SHOULD BE CHARGED CRIMINALLY. THIS IS BLATANT THEFT.

Small business financing recommendations
Followed their advise to apply for small business financing. Each of the three companies had a strategy of appyling for high limit credit cards in my personal name (not a business loan), and each turned me down for low deposits of my business (which is why I want to explore financing options). One company didn't even reply to me for a week in spite they acknowledged the receipt and told me to expect an answer within 48 hours. They claimed 0% interest for a year on the cards, but charged fees to negotiate that.

Ran a credit application without permission
I agreed to check if I prequalify for a loan through One Main Financial and I acknowledged that it was not an application and that it wouldn't take a hit my credit. As it goes through the prequalification process, it checks for "prequalifications" of more companies than One Main Financial. Then I receive an e-mail from one of the other companies that was processed for a supposed prequalification check. It was a number to an actual application that they processed without my consent. I used to really like Nerdwallet up until now. This is not ok. Do not use.

Bait and Switch
After exploring this site and processing and getting pre-qualified offers, I applied for a personal loan with SOFI to cover my family's upcoming surrogacy expenses. Even though I have excellent credit and income, and was pre-qualified on your site and the SOFI's site, my application was denied (and reported). The inducements to apply on your site and the SOFI site say these loans are based on Annual Income. The SOFI website says the loan is based on Annual Income. The SOFI application says the loan will be based on Annual Income. There is NOTHING in the fine print or anywhere else that says otherwise. There is an asterix next to Annual Income on the SOFI application that lists only exceptions like child support, alimony, outside income. But it's a Bait and Switch. It's actually not "Annual Income" at all - the loan is actually based on taxable income - after all IRS allowed expenses, child or other tax credits, standard deductions, business expenses, investments, etc. What a shameful and cruel scam.

Reviews are really paid for advertisements. First they recommend a bank as giving quotes without being contacted. After providing all of the information required, I get to a page requiring my contact information if I want a quote. They also give a highly favorable review to Better.com, which dicked me around asking for information over and over again, only to turn around and state I did not qualify based on information they had from the start. I have over an 800 from all three credit reporting agencies.

Information purposes it's good but ethically so wrong
Information purposes it's good But everyone they recommend or suggest is hard to believe they are being ethical in their reviews . Etrade is latest b.s ....give it 4.5 stars I sign up jump through hoops and 10 days later I'm canceling. Good concept but if you only review and offer services of companies who pay you and those companies suck not only is it bad for them but nerd wallet sucks just as bad suggesting these companies or giving them 4.5 stars when everyone else gives them 3 stars

Just saw their racist commercial. Content of character means nothing which mean they don't have good values as a company. I will never use nerdwallet. I will use a company that believes that good business is way to get good customers. Racist businesses attract racist customers. It says a lot about the people that keep nerwallet

Never use this company!!!
I wrote a review of why you should never use nerd wallet… my advise is to go right to Self. They are wonderful, easy to use. Cancelled today, my check will be here in 3 days and as of midnight my account is closed. With Nerd Wallet I have tried for a month to cancel after being on their web site to cancel (because they don’t have phone access) they keep telling me my password is wrong… but it worked the first 4 times just wouldn’t let me find my way thru the maze to cancel. If I can’t close this I will at the bank and will blast this company for the rest of my life!!!

Racist advertising
I never intend to use nerd wallet because of their ad that includes racist and bigoted insinuations. Investing in companies because of the race of the owners... I have been turned down for employment three different times because of my race which happens to be white. On two of those occasions I was told so by an employee of a government run unemployment agency. Once by an HR representative of a large financial institution. I don't hate anybody of any other race but I do I hate that corporations are becoming political and racist against whites.

Okay so I used nerd wallet for the…
Okay so I used nerd wallet for the better part of a year. I mainly used it for keeping track of bills and money spent which it’s actually excellent for. I wouldn’t suggest using their recommended credit cards or refinance options though. Also, within that year, I have had to get a new debit card (which is the one I had linked to nerd wallet) THREE TIMES for fraudulent spending on my account. They claim they don’t ever share your information but I did see in the FAQ’s that they actually do sell your info. Obviously it’s for marketing reasons and I doubt they would illegally give up bank information but I have to wonder if it’s linked to nerd wallet since there’s no real way this would keep happening after consistently changing my card information and passwords. I don’t recommend using this app, just write your own budget down instead of falling victim to fraud like I did.

Honest scumbags
I give them credit they do say from the outset all reviews are on advertising accounts and they get paid if you purchase anything. But before knowing that contacted them about Synchrony Bank and a fraud case based on Identity Theft. They thanked me but said their reviews were on the savings accounts and investments accounts. I don't know about you but a dishonest bank in one area is probably dishonest in all areas.

List of top prepaid spending cards inaccurate
I was actually going to send them this feedback before I gave them a review, however, they have no way to reach out to them. They only have their FAQ's which they seem to think are all correct. I've been searching for the best prepaid spend card for my older teenager. We currently use Busy Kid and it is not what we want. Controlling is the word I can think of. Maybe for a child under 13 but not a 17-year-old. So once again, I am trying to find a spending card we can transfer money to and the child can spend it (i.e. spend card). How the spending is controlled is that if the money is not on the card, there is no money to spend. If your child did not do their chores or whatever (Busy Kid card), then DON'T put money on their card. It's not rocket science. I've been banking with Chime for 3 years. I was excited when I saw NerdWallet had them listed as having a prepaid card option. Therefore, I reached out to them to verify if they did have a prepaid card option for my child. THEY DO NOT! The reason they do not is they are an actual online bank account (checking, savings, etc.) in which you are required to have a direct deposit setup (company) in order to qualify. NerdWallet has Chime as a top prepaid card. This is incorrect. This is a bank account....period. I was going to let NerdWallet know this so that they could remove Chime from the list, however, they do not want to be contacted. You fill out your information and get taken to their FAQ's. Going forward, I won't be using NerdWallet for searching for the best "anything."

It’s one thing to be open minded and accepting of others, it’s another thing to be so open minded your brains fall right out. Excluding people based on race, sexual identity, ethnicity or sexual preferences while fighting against racists, homophobe’s, misogynists, and xenophobes is as hypocritical, radical (in a negative way), and counter intuitive as you can possibly be. My experience with this company is that it’s a complete mess!

DON'T BE TEMPTED!
Don't go here! I thought I had done enough research and used their credit card top picks to find my next zero interest credit card. I got denied!!! I have excellent credit and there was NO reason for the card/bank to turn me down. That leads me to believe that Nerdwallet's sole reason for being is to gather and sell your personal information. Their "exercise your rights" section is a joke. After wending my way through, I still have no idea if I actually registered they do not have permission to sell my personal information. SO - STAY FAR AWAY!.

NerdWallet + New American Funding = Horrible
Wow! I had no idea I was in such good company! I accessed NerdWallet for refi suggestions and went with New American Funding, which NerdWallet has highly rated. As it turns out, New American Funding is a horrible company with terrible customer interface and inept agents. It took over three months of my time, hours and days of compiling data, forms, tax forms, P&L sheets, credit reports (several of these asked for redundantly weeks later) and in the end, after they wasted untold amounts of my time, I was told that underwriting declined to refi my house because I was temporarily on unemployment for the pandemic. The very first call I made, in August 2020, I spoke with someone named Henri Nyugen (who later "resigned" with no notice and without handing me over to another "agent") who assured me that being on unemployment because of the pandemic would not preclude me from getting a refi. I have an 850 credit score, no debt, $30k in the bank, perfect payment history and $350k equity in my house. This company is a joke and I will never do business with them, ever. Same for NerdWallet. Looking for other places to review -- next will be BBB and CFPB.

Nerd Wallet, racist bigot company promoting racism
Saw a commercial for nerdwallet and it was blatantly racist. One actor says “invest in black owned businesses”. I understand if people have personal agendas but not all of us in the world are right wing or left wing, majority of us are just ordinary people who don't belong to a hyper politicized cult. No way can I support any company that promotes racism. There are people of all walks of life regardless of their race who worked hard to open small businesses and if they run a great business they deserve their communities support. Not all Caucasian people are rich people who never face any of life's struggle and to see a company marginalize any group of people based on their race, is disgusting and reprehensible. Hope this company goes under and out of business where it belongs

Do not use for shopping mortgage or refi lenders!
While I have found NerdWallet to do a good job reviewing credit card programs, avoid any and all of their recommendations as they pertain to mortgage lenders!! Better.com is one of their "preferred" recommendations, and Better is horrible to deal with! Worse yet, Better is primarily a brokerage service for a lender called The Money Source. Got to closing yesterday on Better mortgage and it was disclosed to me that The Money Source would be my lender......I did a quick internet search and was horrified by what I saw regarding this "lender" (term used lightly).

The bottom line is this:
The bottom line is this: Addendum: BELIEVE THIS OR NOT. I HAVE A 703 CREDIT SCORE AFTER ONE YEAR AND ALL THIS COMPLAINING!! I WAS WRONG. SORRY NERD WALLET AND DISCOVER! 1. I listened to their advice to improve my score from fair/almost good to good. 2. I opened a secure Discover cc with my own money. $200. Note: using it at the rate of $150 per month will make you look like you are using 75% of your credit. 3. The day I opened the account my score dropped from upper fair to poor. NO KIDDING. 4. Since, despite paying off the account before it is due monthly, IT DROPPED EVEN LOWER and MY SCORE IS NOW SECURELY IN POOR. 5. This was all done to me with my own money. Not Discover's or Nerdwallet's. Now I cannot even purchase a car to use to work and supplement my social security. ALL THANKS TO DISCOVER AND NERDWALLET. 5.I emailed my Senator; and am glad Biden is elected.

For the past several days I've been seeing online ads from NerdWallet proclaiming 1.60% CD savings rates. But when I go to the NerdWallet website and try to hunt for those CD rates, the highest I find under any type of criteria are 1.10%. I'll never go to their website again.

Nerdwallet is not a real company
Nerdwallet is not a real company. Nerdwallet does not have a real product. Nerdwallet has a page full of companies that will pay them for the traffic that they generate and there is absolutely no rhyme or reason behind their recommendations or ratings beyond this. Luckily for them, Millennials weren't around back in the days when scams like this were everywhere and continue to click their little links to keep that referral engine running.

Nerdwallet reviews misleading and unhelpful
This concerns Nerdwallet reviews of online trading brokerages. I have traded online for many years and used a number of brokerages. Awhile back I took a look at their reviews. Very disappointing! FIRST: They left out one of the largest online brokers completely, while including some small companies I'd never heard of -- some of which did not even have a functioning real-time platform (pretty crucial to serious online traders). SECOND: Despite that, they ALL scored very high with Nerdwallet -- as if they were all top notch, with just minor differences here and there. This is unrealistic. There is quite a bit of difference between brokerages. Nerdwallet gave its highest score to a broker that was by far the worst of any of the five online brokers I've used over the years. Yet they gave a lower score (though still quite high) to another broker I know from experience is far better. THIRD: It became obvious that the Nerdwallet people reviewing the platforms were not serious online traders -- if they traded at all. They seemed to be comparing bells and whistles and features from the companies' websites rather than the trading experience itself... sort of like comparing companies based on their ads. Thus Nerdwallet's criteria/formula for assessing the brokerages was deficient to say the least. I don't say there is no value to Nerdwallet. I gave them 2 stars instead of 1 because they do offer a lot of information on their site and some of it is useful. But their reviews are relatively useless.

Poorly designed website...will cause problems to personal info
Went in to the website and when it asked to create an account it also ask if you would like to use your google account to create and I selected that option. So I continue following the instructions and at the end it uses the google account information to send to the lenders and when I get all denials from all lenders I was in shock for insufficient and lack of credit. So I search their website and my profile and I notice that my google account information is not my name and that information is what their website transferred to create the account so the information was incorrect when it was sent out to the lenders. During the initial account creation it never asks to confirm that your name is correct before sending that information to the lenders. Website is improperly set up to take incorrect information, not verify that information and then send at the end of the account creation. Good thing it is only a soft credit check according to them and hopefully it won't affect my credit score but seeing all lenders deny me was nerdwallet's error that sent them the incorrect information. I downloaded all lender's denial letter's as proof that it has my google account name as my name entered in their letter from my nerdwallet account. I had also received a pre-qualified letter from best egg and when I entered the info to find their rate it also transferred nerdwallet's incorrect information and also denied me because of insufficient credit. Just recently in February 2020, I refinanced my student loan with ELFI through Credible and I have a credit score of 740+. Definitely will not recommend NerdWallet to anyone and will never use them again to find a lender. Should close down their website until this "bug" is corrected.
